Professional Practice Seminar Series

Hosted by the SOAS Department of Development Studies
Invites you to a special lecture

Duncan Green, Director of Research
OXFAM GB
“An Engaged Citizenry and Sustainable Human Development"

Duncan Green explores the thesis of his book, 'From Poverty to Power', that active citizens and effective states are the twin drivers of human development. Using a range of country case studies and drawing on the experience of Oxfam, Green will discuss the nature of citizen action, the role of the state and most importantly, the interaction between the two. What are the ties that bind citizen to state and vice versa? When do states and citizens clash, and when do they collaborate? He will locate this discussion in a wider theory of change, and discuss the implications for our understanding of development, and the role of actors such as aid donors and NGOs
