CARA Book Swap

The Council for Assisting Refugee Academics is organizing a joint event with SOAS to support a refugee academic to attend SOAS for a yearlong fellowship.

The Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA) is a charitable organisation that provides practical support for prosecuted academics, helping to rebuild shattered lives and ensure that their special knowledge and abilities may continue to be used for the benefit of mankind. CARA has supported over 9000 grantees, of which 18 became Nobel Laureates, 14 received Knighthoods and over 100 were elected as fellows or members of The British Academy and The Royal Society. Today they help many refugees pursue research endeavours at universities across the UK and internationally, with a UK grant programme, an Iraq programme, and an upcoming Zimbabwe programme.

CARA was established in 1933 in response to the persecution of Jewish academics and as a means of continuing the significant work that CARA does in helping academics it has decided to hold a Book Swap evening at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) on the 30th of November between 12-6:30pm at the Brunei Gallery.

The aim of the event is to raise enough money to fund a grantees annual tuition fees at SOAS as part of the new CARA/SOAS Fellowship Scheme. In the past three years, the amount spent on each persecuted academic’s need for books was on average £280. In helping others gain books and funds, we are helping refugees in the UK share the privilege of higher education.

At a small price of £4 students, students, staff, and the refugee society will be able to hand in books and walk away with some of the modern greats and dominant literary classics of our time.

CARA remains an organisation run by academics for academics.  Through this Book Swap event, CARA provides a persecuted academic an opportunity to gain priceless academic experience in the UK. With your help we can continue our work supporting the international academic world.
